August 14th, 2017

On August 14th, 2017- i met the love of my life.

It was 3pm and I was texting an old friend from the mission asking if I should go to FHE(family home evening. A Young Single Adult activity.) It was hard for me to decide because it’d only been a month since I came home unexpectedly from the mission I was serving. These big social gatherings were hard for me, I felt awkward, and my English was struggling to be some what acceptable. But, my good friend told me that I needed to go. So I did. And life kind of changed dramatically since that day.

The activity that evening was a game night a there were tables set up to have different groups of people play various different games that evening. Joshua and I sat next to each other at this activity. When I saw him I thought he was so cute. He caught my eye by being extremely kind and friendly. He even knew a sister that served in the same mission as I did! Long story short, he served in this sister’s home ward before she left on her mission. How neat, right?!

We played and played, and I was flirting with him all night. Because I wanted his attention soooo badly. haha I think it’s safe to say I was more invested in him then anything else that evening. So I decided to pull a move. I said “I think I’m going to leave soon.” And Joshua quickly responded and said “wait! (slides his phone over to me) Can I get your number??” Of course I was pretty excited and I said yes! So i gave him my number, and I didn’t leave. I wanted to be around him still. At the end of the evening Joshua’s ride left early and he didn’t have anyone to pick him up. So I offered him a ride. I drove him home, and we talked. At the end of the ride he asked me on a date and I was more than happy to say yes! And yes we did go on that date. And yes I knew he was the one that very first week.

But this. This is only just the beginning of our sweet love story.

P.S. This photo is the photo of the day we first met.

Week 30: 愛する中塚会長と姉妹

The big present to our mission president.

This week we said goodbye to our beloved mission president and his wife. We will be getting a new one this Saturday. We love the Nakatsukas so much. They have changed me and the way I think about missionary work forever. I know God is pleased with the hard work they put into this mission.
I don’t have too much to say this week but something I’ve been studying a lot about is Christ’s life. He was always an example. He led by example. He didn’t have a loud voice, or commanded people to change. He lead people through His love and never ending service. And I know that , THAT is my purpose as a missionary. To lead by love and to serve willingly. When we do that we have the spirit so much more in our hearts and we are able to teach with so much power. I’m grateful to be a missionary everyday. Even in the struggles of Day to day life. Don’t forget Christ in our trials and hardships. He is there. He is cheering on YOUR team.
“[He] would do anything to take this from you.” In fact, “[He] already has.” -Carole M. Stephens

Nakagaki and Miyoshi San. Friends who make sukiyaki together, stay together.

Don’t forget those beautiful words. He’s already suffered through our trials.p and hardships. And let us all be that example to others around us. Because that is what Christ did when He was here on this earth.

Because Japan, Sapporo Mission️.

I love you all!

Week 29: Transfer 5 (あぶない)

Ha ha, guess what everyone, I transferred. Again. To Hakodate. I have finally left the 愛するOdori Zone and on to bigger and greener things! Moiwa was the best, but God needs me somewhere else. This is now my fourth area.

Well this week was transfers. Took a 6 hour bus to Hakodate because it’s the most southern part of Hokkaido. I love Hakodate. It is a beach city and it feels like I’m back In Hawaii. Salty smells and onigiris. I’m a happy person. And everything is SO GREEN. And my companion is WOMACK SHIMAI! It’s a party.

So some miracles that happened this week:
-Met a Chinese girl who speaks English while streeting. She’s met missionaries before. It was so cool.
-Made a baptismal date with the cutest mom. She cried as we showed her a “because of Him” video. The power of the atonement is real. I’ve seen it. I’ve felt it. And now she has too.
-Helped resolve some concerns with another investigator and will have a baptismal date made this coming week
-Danced with these grandma sisters and saw their faces light up. One of them has Parkinson’s Disease. So it was cool to see how God is aware of these grandmas. Giving them small tender mercies to make life so sweet.
-Our investigator came to church for all 3 hours of church
-It was Hakodate’s ward Conference so I got to see some members from Kotoni and Moiwa Ward because they are in stake callings!! It’s a special feeling to see the people from an area you served in. It’s a humbling feeling.

Quote of the week:
“Happiness here and now consists in freely, lovingly, joyfully acknowledging God’s will for us–and doing it in all ways and all affairs big and small.”

Hannant Shimai has left and gone home.

I’m grateful for this mission! The people of Japan! God loves us all so Personally!

Week 28: Transfer 4 is over . . .

At the Koyama Kazoku’s dinner!! SO fun! A temple missionary couple came too. (And gave my comp and I chips and salsa….BLESSED)

And yes this transfer was extra short. Our mission president is leaving soon and lots of crazy fun things are happening for this transfer was only 3 weeks. I really hope I stay in Moiwa because it has been CRAZY AMAZING lately.
At the beginning of this transfer my comp and I looked at each other and were like “oh my goodness where do we start!?” Our area book deleted ALL our investigators addresses and a whole bunch of other stuff happened but it’s okay. We made a goal to do “6 weeks of work in 3 weeks time”

The Elder’s Good Samaritan skit for the pancake party

And we did SO much! I’m grateful for my companions example to me. I love her so much. This week was crazy!! We had a pancake party and made a BAPTISMAL DATE!! Ahhhh!! We have this investigator who really wants to change her life and make a new person out of herself. She’s crazy but I love her to pieces!! We’ve done a lot of finding and working with less active members. This transfer Id been able to witness a reactivation of a sister in the Moiwa ward that I love so much. At the beginning of last transfer she wouldn’t come to church or be involved with the members. But now she comes to church every week and stays for all 3 hours. Never give up on people!! Because of Christ’s atonement we all have an infinite amount of chances to become the person God knows what can be.

Our kind messages to each other…TEAM MOIWA. (Aka best area/district ever)

One of my new favorite quotes is by President Thomas S. Monson  “You can’t be right by doing wrong; you can’t be wrong by doing right”. Always be found doing the right thing!!
I love y’all!!

Week 27: Birthday Cake and Miracles

THANK YOU ALL FOR THE BIRTHDAY WISHES! They really made my day yesterday. This was truly one heck of an awesome week.

Dinner with the Bishop and his wonderful wife!

For starters this week the missionaries were fed 4 days in a row by members!! (Which is not common in Japan) and I have such bad rice cheeks right now it’s a little (a lot) ridiculous. But when you see the pictures just know that’s all the love I’m getting from Moiwa! (Which you can say is quite a lot)

GYOZA PARTY (the chapel smelled like garlic all throughout the church the next day. Ha ha.)

Fun fact, all our addresses for our investigators have been erased from our Area Book so it kind of been nuts because we don’t know where these people live now. BUT! Through the spirit we have been guided to so many people’s houses which has been a blessing and tender mercy.

Birthday Cake!

Birthday wishes from Eikaiwa (English Class. They also threw me a surprise birthday party. So much love!).

Yesterday was my birthday in Japan and so many amazing things happened. Our investigator came to church, our less active came to church and stayed all 3 hours! And at the end of church a cute young gal came in and told us she had interest in joining our church. Seriously miracles after miracles. All in between members gave me birthday presents and wishes. I feel so humbled by Moiwa Ward’s love for missionaries.

Birthday Dinner!

At night the cutest family fed all of us missionaries and made me cakes! Not one…but 3! Ahh! It was so sweet. And the elders made me a cake too so we all ate tako, rice, karaage chicken, and CAKE! And it was my favorite. Strawberries and cream. It was really a birthday to remember!! I’m so grateful!
On a spiritual note: this week I’ve been fervently studying faith because I felt like that’s what I’ve been lacking. Me and my companion have working hard on having faith as we dendo and oh my goodness, this week has been wonderful. Have faith everyone! Remember God is always here!

“If there is any one thing that you and I need, … [it is] the kind of faith that moves us to get on our knees and plead with the Lord for guidance, and then, having a measure of divine confidence, get on our feet and go to work to help bring the desired results to pass.”

-Gordon B. Hinckley

I love you all!! Be happy!

Week 26: Elder Oaks, Transfer 4, and 6 MISSIONARIES WHAT?!

It is now transfer four!! I have a nihonjin companion again!

District Lunch

I’m gonna be short this week,  but know that it’s been amazing seeing Elder Oaks, and the whole entire mission!! So much more has happened. He said that we are in a really hard mission, but he knows we try really hard and he was proud of us. And that this mission has a warm feeling to it. It was really so nice.

Moiwa missionaries (minus 2).

Kids Eikaiwa

Moiwa is super awesome and I’m sad this transfer is only 3 weeks. But really it’s been a wonderful time. 🙂

Hannant Shimai HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

I saw Hannant Shimai!! She leaves in two weeks, ahhhhh!! Crazy. I’m so busy today! But just know I love you and next week I promise there will be more.

Week 25: Wait . . . transfer 3 is over?

Hello! I knows it’s been a little while. I’m sorry everyone… but how was your week?! I hope it was good. Mine was uhm…nonetheless interesting of course!

Our district pic (Best district eeeevrrrrr)

So this past week I got really sick. It’s probably the worst cold I’ve ever had in my life. And I also got my companion sick(ごめんね)!So we had to stay inside a lot to prevent disease. Lol. But I still learned a lot!

Yesterday we got our transfer calls! And of course I am….NOT TRANSFERRING!! First time I’ve heard that before. Crazy right?! Haha but this transfer will only be 3 weeks because our mission president is leaving in July and a whole bunch of craziness is happening between now and then. So, yes. Haha my new companion will be…SHIMADA SHIMAI! I have another Nihonjin comp! I’m so excited!! But I am also really sad Watabe Shimai will be going. We had many many funny memories here in Moiwa but I’m sure she will be amazing wherever she goes!

My beautiful area.

This past transfer I thought a LOT about who I really was as a missionary…what kind of rep I have…and different questions like…”am I a baptizing missionary? ….will my Japanese always suck? How come I don’t have big miracles like other missionaries have? ” But then I realized I was getting swallowed up in my pride and started comparing myself with others and others expectations of me. I found a quote in Preach my Gospel that kind of opened my eyes more. “If you lower your expectations, your effectiveness will decrease, your desire will weaken, and you will have greater difficulty following the spirit.” From that I learned….woah. I’m doing that to myself. I’m expecting the least out of myself instead of focusing on the bigger picture. And I had a moment where I had to reevaluate myself and remind me that I AM a representative of our Savior, Jesus Christ. I can’t expect anything but my very best to these people of Hokkaido that I’m serving.
I love my calling! And love all of you!
